PF Changs Marathon: Josh Cox Looks to Run to Record-Setting Win

PF Changs Marathon is underway out in Arizona, with the marathon taking on a different look this year as compared to year's past, but with one man standing out as the clear favorite: U.S. runner Josh Cox, who recently won the Rock 'n' Roll Las Vegas Marathon in early December.
Cox is looking to become the first American runner to win the PF Changs Marathon in Arizona, which for years was dominated by elite Ethiopian runners.
The field, however, is different for this year's race, and economic reasons are at the very heart of the shift.
The race often drew big names in the long distance running world, thanks to prize monies approaching $20,000 for the winner of the marathon. This year, however, due to budge tightening the ultimate race prize is only $1,000.
That opens the door for Cox, who is considered the favorite to win this race, but is also trying to set another record simultaneously.
He's gunning for the 26.2 mile marathon win, but is looking to break a world record in the road 50K, meaning the best all-time run of 31.05 miles.
So Cox is going to run the entire marathon, then put in another additional five miles in the hopes of breaking a world record.
It's an impressive, ambitious goal for an American runner. You'll have to check it out and see if Cox can pull off this lofty double.
