War Eagle will be heard ad nauseum for the next few weeks. After the tough a gritty performance on Monday night, we will be treated to the most sacred aspect of being an Auburn Tiger, war eagle.
The cry has been around for nearly 100 years. Its origin is debatable. Some state that it came from a game in the University's early days. Apparently the offense was targeting a tackle whose nickname was Eagle. The Auburn quarterback continually yelled out for "Bald Eagle" so that the play would run his way. The crowd though he was saying War Eagle and began its chant.
Another story has the Plains Indians giving the name "War Eagle" to the eagles that furnished their head gear feathers. www.wdalaw.com
But no matter the origin, the battle cry is much more potent in its power to unite a campus and alumni. War Eagle is a badge to wear proudly.
