A shopping mall in Chandler, Ariz., remained locked down Wednesday after a gunman surrendered to police, authorities said.
The Arizona Republic reported one person was arrested but the Chandler Fashion Center remained closed as of 3 p.m. while police searched for at least one more possible suspect.
ABC News reported an armed man believed to be Daniel Munoz Perez gave himself up after a 3-hour standoff that began with an exchange of gunfire between the suspect and U.S. marshals. The man, who had his shirt off, was swarmed by police who handcuffed and took him away, the network said.
ABC said there were no immediate reports of injuries.
Tim Gaffney, a spokesman for the Pina County Sheriff's Department, said Perez, 25, is a suspect in a shooting with police last month and was mistakenly released from jail, KNXV-TV in Phoenix reported.
Chandler Police Sgt. Joe Favazzo said the suspect entered the mall about noon and fired at officers who confronted him near the Sears store.
David Gonzalez, a spokesman for the U.S. Marshals Service, said Perez had been accidentally released Dec. 16 from the Pinal County jail. He is accused of shooting at police Dec. 10 outside a home in Casa Grande.
"We were looking for a fugitive wanted for attempted murder on a police officer, [and] they located him today in [the] Chandler area near the mall," the TV station quoted Gonzalez as saying about Perez. " ... When the mall surveillance security officers spotted him, he started shooting, then he disappeared into the mall. The mall has been evacuated."
