Picking apart the Doctor Who season six trailer

Season six of Doctor Who begins to reveal itself...
Tonight’s Doctor Who Christmas Special, 'A Christmas Carol', was awesome! I recorded it and will be watching the re-broadcasts tonight. But since Martin already did such a wonderful job of  this special, I will instead discuss the teaser trailer for season six that showed right after the special. In only a short amount of time, it throws a lot at you and makes you want more...

The first scene is of a French 18th century aristocrat followed by two Musketeer-looking fellows angrily rushing into a room. The man in the lead bellows out, “Where’s the Doctor?” Then we flash to a dark house interior, where three members of Hitler’s SS walk in, as if looking for somebody. We then hear The Doctor in a voiceover. “I’ve been running”, he says, “faster than I’ve ever run. Now it’s time for me to stop.” There’s a scene of The Doctor, Amy, and River running in the TARDIS, a scene of what looks like The Doctor running with an unknown young lady through a dark room, followed by men searching another dark room, guns drawn. Suddenly, Secret Service men rush into the Oval Office, only to find The Doctor sitting at the President’s desk. He asks for a SWAT team ready to immobilize a street in Florida, a pot of coffee, twelve Jammie Dodgers, and a fez (they’re cool, you know).
Suddenly, helicopter shots of the desert. We follow a car. The voiceover tells us he needs to hide “somewhere different, somewhere brand new”. Then, we see The Doctor leaning back, wearing of all things, a cowboy hat. “I wear a Stetson now. Stetson’s are cool.” Alas, the hat doesn’t last long, because it’s shot off of his head by none other than River Song (she really hates him in hats).

Her voiceover tells him that he’s been recruited, to which he asks “By whom”. There’s an interior shot of a military-looking establishment (the area of the United States would suggest Area 51), and suddenly a shot of The Doctor, chained up and sporting a beard, suggesting he’s been held for quite a while. River tells him he’s going to have to trust “us” this time. Amy tells him he has to do it and not ask why. It’s around this point (about the :30 mark) that something that looks an awful lot like the interior of another TARDIS is shown. Then, The Doctor getting up next to a woman in an antique dress, next to what looks like a crashed spacecraft. A glimpse of someone in a spacesuit, shots of Amy, The Doctor, River apparently naked (:39 mark, for those curious, not that I was paying any attention), Amy nearly falling off of a cliff as she’s being chased by Men in Black, Rory running but being stopped by a big door, an Ood (Yay! Ood!), strange looking aliens, and Amy screaming.
“My life in your hands, Amelia Pond”, says The Doctor. “See these eyes? They’re all lies. The only thing I can tell you – monsters are real.” We are given flashes of our favorite time travelers looking disheveled, and quite worried. We also get a glimpse of the classic grey-green aliens we know from the Roswell and alien abduction stories.
Not much has been handed out in the way of spoilers for season six, other than Amy, Rory and River are all back, more of River’s past will be revealed, and there won’t be any classic monsters this time around. Also, the new series will be split into two parts, with six episodes shown in the spring and the other seven shown in the fall. I’m not sure I can handle that, but I’ll deal, just so long as we don’t have to   for American broadcasts. All in all, I have to say, this trailer has got me excited. It’s only a minute long, but a lot is thrown at us, and I hope they make a habit of filming in the US. Maybe somewhere in the Midwest? I’d be willing to put everybody up for the night.
